The first thing you’ll notice about the XL squares when you have them in your hands is the thickness of the adjustable head. With just under 1/2" beneath the blade you’ll never worry about molded edges changing your readings. The squares have a firm footing when standing vertical for cabinet checks or machinery adjustment, too. Machined from aircraft grade aluminum, the heads weigh less than a cast iron head that’s half the thickness and shorter along the reference edges. The bright “Woodpeckers Red” anodized finish makes the squares easy to find in your shop and they’ll never rust, regardless of your working environment.
Next you’ll notice the laser-cut notches in the stainless-steel blades. The points are just the right size to capture a pencil tip for highly accurate parallel scribing. One set of the notches aligns with each eighth-inch and the second aligns with the odd-numbered sixteenths. But where’s the “zero point” for the scribing guides? How do you get a true starting point with a head that moves? An on-board index pin will lock the head at any full inch…now your scribing guides are dialed in and ready for accurate parallel marking…even in tight quarters.
The scales engraved on the blades of the squares have 16ths on one edge and 32nds on the other. All scales are laser engraved to a tolerance of .004" total accumulated error over the entire length of the blade. That’s about the thickness of a human hair spread over the 6-, 12- or 18-inch blade length. The stainless-steel blades go through a multi-step finishing process to give them a lustrous satin finish, and the deeply engraved graduations are crisp and dark.
If your work rarely involves larger stock and working around molded edges, our traditionally-sized Combination and Double Squares have the scribing and indexing features, but with a head thickness of 9/16" compared to the full 1" found in the XL models. It’s a size that most woodworkers will find familiar.
The Combination Squares gives you square and 45° references. Layout or check miter joints and square cuts quickly and accurately. The Double Squares are square on both sides and the heads are a bit smaller than the Combination Square heads, fitting into small assemblies better. The indexing feature is offset on the Double Squares so you’re zeroed out to a perfect inch on one side of the head and at the half-inch mark on the other.
The Combination Square XL comes equipped with an 18" blade and the Double Square XL comes with a 12" blade. The standard Combination Square comes with a 12" blade and the standard Double Square comes with 6" blade. If you get one of the sets, the blades are completely interchangeable, so you can make the Combination Square shorter or the Double Square longer depending on your project needs. We also sell the three blades individually, so you can customize your square exactly the way you want it.
